Brampton: A Malayali priest has been accused of sexual assault in Brampton, Canada. Syro-Malabar Church priest James Cherikkal has been arrested by police on charges of sexual assault.
Fr.James Cherikkal was last serving at St. Jerome's Catholic Church in Brampton. He has served in various parishes in the Greater Toronto Area, including Mississauga and Scarborough, over the past 30 years. The archdiocese said in a statement that he was removed in accordance with church procedures that should be followed immediately after receiving a complaint.
As the case is currently under court consideration, the police are not prepared to release further information out of concern for the security of the investigation. The church has made it clear that he, like any other person, is entitled to legal protection until proven guilty. However, church officials added that they take such complaints very seriously.
