Authorities in Iran have arrested 20 individuals in the country’s northwestern region on suspicion of acting as informants for Israel, according to reports from the Iranian news agency Tasnim News Agency.
Citing a statement from the prosecutor’s office in West Azerbaijan Province, the report stated that the suspects are accused of transmitting the locations of Iranian military and security facilities to Israeli authorities. Officials allege that the group attempted to pass sensitive intelligence to Israeli forces.
Iranian authorities have previously announced arrests of individuals accused of espionage or collaboration with foreign intelligence agencies. However, such allegations are often made without publicly presenting detailed evidence.
The reported arrests come at a time of heightened tensions between Iran and Israel, as Israeli forces are said to have initiated a new phase of operations targeting Iranian assets.
According to sources familiar with Israel’s military strategy cited by Reuters, Israeli forces have been striking security checkpoints based on intelligence reportedly provided by informants operating on the ground inside Iran.
Meanwhile, officials from the United States and Israel told The Times of Israel that ongoing airstrikes across Iran are aimed at members of the regime’s security apparatus who were allegedly involved in suppressing anti-government protests earlier this year.
According to the officials, the objective of these operations is to weaken the regime’s enforcement capabilities and potentially create conditions that would allow demonstrators to return to the streets once the current wave of bombardment subsides.
