London: A travel vlogger has ignited widespread debate online after sharing a video criticising the hygiene and lifestyle in London, challenging the idealised image that many people in India and Pakistan often associate with the British capital.
The video, posted on Instagram by travel content creator Meharma, features footage from public spaces and transport hubs across the city. In the clip, the vlogger questions the perception frequently shared by South Asian communities that life in London is exceptionally comfortable and refined.
Viral Clip Questions Popular Perceptions
The video begins with the vlogger introducing the location with the remark, “This is London, baby,” before cautioning viewers that some of the visuals might appear unpleasant. The footage then shows scenes from public areas and the city’s metro system, where passengers are seen covering their noses—apparently reacting to an unpleasant smell.
Pointing to littered surroundings in certain public spaces, the vlogger claims such scenes contribute to what she describes as “a bad smell everywhere in London.” She also anticipates criticism from UK viewers, suggesting that some may dispute her portrayal of the city.
In her commentary, Meharma states that people in South Asia often hear glowing accounts from relatives living abroad about life in London, particularly regarding daily routines and commuting experiences. According to her, the reality seen on the streets and public transport can differ significantly from that perception.
Focus on London Underground
A significant portion of the video focuses on the city’s public transport network, particularly the London Underground. The vlogger compares what she describes as chaotic or unclean scenes inside certain train compartments with the widely held belief that London’s metro system is highly organised and comfortable.
One segment of the video reportedly shows an individual urinating on the metro tracks while others nearby appear to ignore the act. The vlogger uses this footage to question the image of the underground as a model of urban transport efficiency.
She also sarcastically compares the surroundings to areas in South Asia, asking viewers whether the footage might resemble neighbourhoods near Bhati Gate in Lahore, rather than central London.
Online Reactions Divided
The video quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions from viewers online. Some social media users expressed shock at the scenes depicted in the clip.
One commenter wrote that the footage made them uncomfortable about using public transport anywhere in the world. Another user compared the situation to metro systems in India, claiming that services such as the Delhi Metro were cleaner and better maintained.
However, others strongly disagreed with the vlogger’s portrayal of London. Some users who claimed to have visited or lived in the city said the video presented an exaggerated or misleading view and insisted that London remains a well-maintained and vibrant global metropolis.
The video has since fuelled an ongoing discussion online about urban sanitation, the realities of life in major global cities, and the gap that can exist between perception and everyday experience.
