Prolonged Power Outage in Thane Exposes Civic Lapses and Coordination Failures

A prolonged power outage across several parts of Thane on Friday has raised serious concerns over infrastructure management and coordination between civic agencies, after thousands of residents were left without electricity for nearly 21 hours during peak summer conditions.

The disruption began early Friday morning in Panchpakhadi when an underground power cable was accidentally damaged during routine civic excavation work. The incident triggered a cascading crisis that later spread to multiple localities, including Ghodbunder Road, Kasarvadavali, Anand Nagar, Owala, Waghbil, and Bhayandarpada.

Initial Disruption and Delayed Response

According to officials from Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL), the first outage occurred around 5 am when excavation machinery struck an underground cable in Panchpakhadi.

While repair teams were deployed promptly, restoration efforts were delayed due to procedural requirements, including obtaining permission from municipal authorities to dig up the road surface. As a result, electricity supply in the area was restored only by approximately 4 pm, leaving residents without power for nearly 11 hours amid intense heat.

Residents described the conditions as extremely challenging, particularly for the elderly, children, and those with medical needs, as basic amenities such as fans, refrigeration, and cooling systems remained unavailable throughout the day.

Second Incident Deepens Crisis

Just as supply was being restored in Panchpakhadi, a second incident compounded the situation. A separate municipal team engaged in pipeline work near Kasarvadavali along Ghodbunder Road reportedly damaged another underground cable around 4 pm.

This led to fresh outages across several densely populated areas, including Raunak Heights, Anand Nagar, Owala, Waghbil, and Bhayandarpada, extending the disruption well into the night.

Communication Gaps and Public Frustration

Residents attempting to seek updates from MSEDCL encountered long wait times and shifting restoration timelines. Initial assurances of power restoration by 9 pm were later revised multiple times, with supply failing to stabilise even past midnight.

Many residents reported being placed in lengthy call queues while trying to reach the utility’s helpline, reflecting the scale of the disruption and the strain on response systems.

Online forums and social media platforms became informal channels for updates, with residents sharing real-time information and expressing frustration over the prolonged outage and lack of clear communication.

Recurring Infrastructure Challenges

Notably, residents pointed out that similar incidents have occurred previously along the same Ghodbunder Road corridor, where excavation activities have repeatedly led to damage of underground utilities.

The episode has once again highlighted systemic issues in urban infrastructure management, where multiple agencies—including road contractors, water pipeline teams, and power utilities—operate in shared underground spaces with limited coordination and mapping.

Restoration and Aftermath

Power supply was gradually restored across most affected areas by Saturday morning. However, the prolonged outage left residents grappling with both physical discomfort and operational disruptions during a sweltering summer night.

The incident has renewed calls for improved coordination between civic bodies and utility providers, as well as better planning and safeguards to prevent avoidable damage to critical infrastructure.

While repairs have been completed, the episode underscores a broader concern: the need for systemic reforms to ensure that similar disruptions do not recur in other parts of the city.
