South Africa Launches 48-Hour Digital Travel Approval System for Indian Citizens

JOHANNESBURG — South Africa has officially rolled out its highly anticipated Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for eligible Indian passport holders. The new framework allows travellers to bypass physical visa centers entirely and secure digital entry permission online within 24 to 48 hours.

This landmark shift eliminates conventional paperwork, physical passport submissions, and long queues at outsourced processing facilities. The initiative is aimed at modernising South Africa's border management while tapping into India's rapidly expanding outbound travel market.

Key Highlights of the New Immigration Framework

• 100% Paperless Processing: Applicants can establish a profile on the Official South African Department of Home Affairs Portal, upload necessary documents, and execute biometric verification directly through their smartphones.
• 90-Day Multiple-Entry Stay: Once issued, the approval links digitally to the traveller's passport as a secure QR code, authorising short-term tourism or business stays for up to 90 days.
• Designated Entry Gateways: During this initial launch phase, incoming ETA travellers must arrive through one of three designated international airports:
  1. O.R. Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg)
  2. Cape Town International Airport
  3. Lanseria International Airport

"The new Electronic Travel Authorisation is an important step towards making travel planning simpler and faster."

To make the digital ecosystem sustainable, the Department of Home Affairs recently published draft regulations proposing a ZAR 500 (approx. $30) processing fee for all online applications. According to Home Affairs officials, this nominal fee keeps the digital infrastructure self-funded while remaining significantly cheaper than traditional agent fees.

Industry analysts anticipate that the 48-hour turnaround will drastically accelerate corporate travel, holiday bookings, and spontaneous leisure travel from India to South Africa.
