Marathi Thriller 'Gondhal' Selected as India’s Official Entry for the 2027 Academy Awards

Mumbai — The Film Federation of India has announced that the Marathi thriller Gondhal, directed by Santosh Davkhar, has been chosen as India’s official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 99th Academy Awards.

A total of 33 films from various Indian languages were submitted for consideration this year. The selection pool included 14 Hindi films, four films each in Marathi, Telugu, and Gujarati, three Tamil films, one Malayalam film, one Nagamese film, and a silent film.

Gondhal previously won the prestigious 'Silver Peacock' award at the International Film Festival of India in 2025. The high-profile selection jury comprised P. Sheshadri, Vijay Patkar, Hutu Kanodia, Shanthi Kumar, Sandeep Parashar, Sanjay Patil, Sabu Joseph, Anil Thomas, Vivek Vaswani, Bijon Dasgupta, Hasan, Vasan, and Tannishtha Chatterjee.

Last year, Neeraj Ghaywan’s COVID-19-themed drama Homebound, starring Ishaan Khatter and Vishal Jethwa, served as India’s official Oscar entry, though it ultimately failed to secure a spot on the Academy’s preliminary shortlist.

The 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled to take place on March 14, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.
