NEW DELHI — India is projected to remain the world’s fastest-growing large economy in 2026, with growth estimated at 7.3%, according to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). However, global economic growth is expected to slow from 2.9% in 2025 to 2.6% this year.
UNCTAD’s Trade and Development Report 2026, released on October 9, projects that developing economies will grow by 4% in 2026, down from 4.7% last year. Geopolitical tensions, higher energy prices and uncertainty over trade policies are among the factors putting pressure on the global economy.
Asia is expected to account for 59% of global economic growth in 2026. India’s growth is projected at 7.3%, compared with 5.2% for Indonesia and 4.5% for China.
Global trade in goods and services is forecast to grow by 4% in 2026, slower than the 4.4% expansion recorded in 2025. Global trade reached a record $35 trillion last year. However, UNCTAD noted that rising energy prices are driving much of the increase in trade values this year.
The report highlights Asia’s role in supporting global growth while warning that the benefits remain unevenly distributed. Many developing economies continue to face challenges linked to energy costs, financial pressures and changing international trade conditions.
