NEW DELHI — YouTuber Dhruv Rathee and several leaders of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) were detained ahead of a planned protest at Jantar Mantar demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained after arriving at Delhi airport, according to media reports. Rathee was reportedly detained at his residence in Gurugram, while CJP legal cell head Ratna Singh was also reported to have been detained at her home.
Hundreds of people who travelled to Delhi for the demonstration were reportedly detained at different locations. Police tightened security, set up barricades and increased vehicle checks. Security measures also restricted access at 45 Metro stations and affected some train services.
The CJP called the protest over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Protesters claim eligible voters have been wrongly removed from the lists. The Election Commission says the exercise aims to improve the accuracy of electoral rolls by identifying ineligible and duplicate entries.
Delhi Police said permission for the protest had been denied because the application was submitted late and concerns had been raised over compliance with conditions imposed during an earlier demonstration. It has not been confirmed that everyone detained was formally arrested.
