NEW DELHI — The Delhi government has conducted two cloud-seeding trials near Indira Gandhi International Airport as part of efforts to explore artificial rain as a possible measure to tackle severe air pollution. The experiments were carried out over the past two weeks to assess whether the technique could help reduce airborne dust and smoke particles.
The government is considering further trials after the Diwali and Chhath festivals, potentially with support from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. Cloud seeding involves introducing special particles into suitable clouds to encourage rainfall.
However, the success of the technique depends on weather conditions, cloud characteristics and atmospheric moisture. There is no guarantee that the experiments will produce rain. Similar trials conducted in Delhi last year did not result in significant rainfall. The latest exercise is aimed at assessing the technology's potential rather than offering an established long-term solution to the capital's air pollution.
