TEHRAN — Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has reported that two oil tankers and a tugboat caught fire in separate incidents in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important routes for international oil shipments. The incidents were linked by the IRGC to vessels attempting to use unauthorised navigation routes.
According to the Iranian force, one tanker struck a mine while attempting to cross a passage south of the strait. A second supertanker caught fire while exiting a route in the eastern part of the waterway. A tugboat that approached the second vessel to assist with firefighting operations also caught fire.
The full circumstances of the incidents and the extent of the damage have not been independently confirmed. The reports have drawn attention to maritime security risks in the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant share of global oil supplies is transported.
