KHAMMAM — All 11 people who went missing after two rescue boats capsized during a mission to save fishermen in Telangana’s Khammam district have been rescued safely, officials confirmed on Thursday morning. The operation also ensured the safe return of fishermen stranded in the floodwaters of Bethupalli Lake in Sathupalli mandal.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening after heavy rainfall caused the water level in the lake to rise sharply, leaving several fishermen stranded. Rescue teams initially managed to bring three people to safety. However, two boats carrying 10 rescue personnel and a local resident capsized while attempting to reach those still trapped in the water.
The strong currents swept the occupants downstream, triggering an extensive search operation involving the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Fire Services personnel. Some of those swept away managed to take shelter in trees and maintained contact with authorities, helping rescue teams trace their locations.
The fishermen were also brought to safety during the operation. All 11 missing rescuers were subsequently located and rescued by Thursday morning. No casualties were reported.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy had directed senior officials to intensify rescue efforts and closely monitor the situation. Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy also coordinated with district authorities and monitored the operation.
