WASHINGTON — The United States has imposed fresh sanctions on Indian nationals and companies accused of helping Iran evade international restrictions on its oil trade. The measures, announced by the US Treasury Department on Wednesday, target India-based businessman Suniel Kumar Sharma, his wife Jaspreet Preeti Shahid, two other Indian nationals associated with their businesses and nine related entities.
The Treasury Department alleged that the network provided false vessel registrations and maritime certifications to help sanctioned ships transport Iranian petroleum, including vessels linked to Iran's military and its proxies.
The action is part of the Trump administration's 'Operation Economic Outcast', aimed at restricting Iran's oil revenues and financial activities. The United States has also sanctioned Turkey-based Fugo Ground Services Inc over its alleged support for Iran's aviation sector.
The allegations have been made by the US authorities. Further details of any response from the individuals or companies concerned were not immediately available.
