NEW DELHI — Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has said that all Agniveers will be eligible for enrolment as regular soldiers after completing an additional two-year service period, subject to their willingness and meeting the required selection criteria.
He made the announcement while interacting with armed forces personnel during a Diwali event at Bagdogra Air Force Station in West Bengal on Saturday.
The government had earlier announced a two-year extension for Agniveers who are not selected for regular service after their initial four-year term. Following the extended period, they will be eligible for regular enrolment, provided they meet the prescribed conditions.
The new arrangement is expected to benefit personnel serving under the Agnipath scheme. More than three lakh Agniveers are currently serving in the armed forces.
The scheme, introduced in 2022, initially allowed up to 25 per cent of each batch to be retained in regular service after four years. The revised arrangement provides an additional route for eligible personnel to continue their military careers.
