JERUSALEM — Israeli President Isaac Herzog has selected former military chief Gadi Eisenkot to try to form a new government following an election that left parliament without a clear majority.
The October 27 election resulted in a divided 120-member Knesset. Benjamin Netanyahu's bloc secured 53 seats, while Eisenkot's four-party coalition won 48. Two Arab parties, together holding 19 seats, have backed Eisenkot.
However, Eisenkot has ruled out serving in a government alongside Arab parties, making the task of securing a parliamentary majority difficult.
He has 28 days to negotiate an agreement, with a possible extension of two weeks. If he fails, another candidate may be given the opportunity to form a government. A failure to reach an agreement could eventually lead to another election.
Eisenkot, a former chief of the Israel Defence Forces, entered politics in 2022 and has been a prominent critic of Netanyahu's handling of the Gaza conflict.
