Willoughby said it was part of new integrated technology tools that would make gardaí more efficient, eliminate paperwork and help make people's lives safer.
"When you see a garda holding up a phone at a checkpoint, they're not photographing or filming you, they're scanning, they're reading the number plate and that automatically tells them which cars to stop," he said.

Some TDs have welcomed new technological advances in policing but have warned that the public will turn against them as they make it harder for motorists. Chief Superintendent Con Cadogan responded that the increased efficiency in policing would affect criminals the most, and since 2020 more than 4,000 vehicles had been seized for not having insurance, which he said was a direct result of technological advances.
