Dublin: The representative bodies of healthcare assistants in Ireland have expressed concern that workers in private and voluntary nursing homes have yet to receive their Covid-19 bonus payments.
A tax-free payment of €1,000 to front-line staff was announced last January in recognition of their work during the pandemic. However, thousands of workers are yet to receive it.
Nursing Homes Ireland (NHI) and the Alliance of Healthcare Assistants in Ireland (AHCAI) have condemned "unacceptable delays" in paying some staff members during the pandemic.
"Today, Monday, September 19, marks eight months since the government announced the recognition payment," she said. Yet, to date, workers in private and voluntary nursing homes and other services who have supported our most vulnerable during the pandemic are still to receive payment. "The latest development for the health department is that it needs to engage in a tender process for the payment rollout," the NHI chief executive said. "The government announced this project in January and we are approaching the end of the year and now they are telling us to go through a tender process," he said.
“The extensive and unacceptable delays demonstrated are a disgrace to nursing home staff. The good-will and gratitude which this payment was intended to signify has disappeared among these very gallant workers during this epidemic.
"We are very patient and understanding," she said. However, it is incredible that eight months after the Department of Health and the HSE have been working on the scheme, they are still unable to implement a practical plan to finalize payments. This protracted delay shows disrespect to staff and the profession." Doyle said.
It is incredible that a country that keeps records of every person's employment and can document the rollout of vaccinations to 40,000 workers in our sector in a short period of time cannot establish a system to make payments with less fuss. The delay in this important issue for people who have endured so long during Covid-19 is an insult to staff in nursing homes and frontline services.
