Dublin: To date, 669 people have been on trolleys in Irish hospitals, including 28 children. Today recorded the highest number of patients on trolleys so far this year. According to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation, 669 people were found on trolleys in Irish hospitals.
University Hospital Limerick currently has the highest number of people on trolleys with 80, followed by Cork University Hospital with 72. Letterkenny University Hospital and St James's Hospital have 51 patients and University Hospital Galway has 45 on trolleys.
INMO has seen a 27% increase in the number of patients on trolleys in the last week. INMO General Secretary Phil Ni Shegda described the figures as "extremely worrying but not surprising". “The health and safety of our members and the patients they do their best to care for must be a priority. We know they are currently working in unsafe care environments.
NÃ Sheaghdha added that "a range of measures must now be taken in the short to medium term, including cuts to all non-urgent and elective care". They called for immediate provision of capacity from the private sector, along with "laser focus on recruitment and retention".
"If the Government and the HSE are serious about retaining Irish nurses in Irish hospitals, they must take urgent action to secure staffing, speed up recruitment and partner with private hospitals." The INMO General Secretary urged the HSE, Health Minister Stephen Donnelly and the Health and Safety Authority to take urgent action in the worst-hit areas.
She also called for specialist teams to be deployed to Cork University Hospital and University Hospital Galway today.
