Dublin: More than 67,000 students received their Junior Cert exam results today. This is five months after writing the exam. These are the first Junior Cert results to be released in three years after national exams for school students were canceled during the pandemic. Students have until Wednesday, November 30 to appeal the results.
Students were given their results today in their schools. They can access them online from 4 p.m. This year's results also mark the completion of the move from the old 'Junior Certificate' system to the new Junior Cycle framework. In recent years the new curriculum has been phased in for each subject, and this year marks the first time that all subjects will be examined as part of the new revised programme.
Students receive grades instead of the old alphabetical reporting structure familiar to many parents.ie.. from; Distinction, Higher Merit, and Merit, to; Achieved, Partially Achieved, or Not Graded.
Under the new curriculum, all subjects except Irish, English and Mathematics are now examined at a Junior Cycle Common Level as opposed to Higher and Ordinary. Schools will now combine results in tests with other learning outcomes measured by their teachers to form a "Junior Cycle Profile of Achievement" for each student. This means that the old "Junior Certificate" will no longer be issued by the State Examinations Commission (SEC).
The State Examinations Commission (SEC) has cited shortage of examination officials as the main factor behind the delay in publishing the results. Regarding the delay in releasing the results, the SEC said the pandemic has exacerbated pre-existing "severe difficulties" in recruiting teachers to handle exam papers. The State Examinations Commission (SEC) says the recruitment and retention of teachers is now an "urgent system-wide issue". SEC figures reveal that the number of examinees correcting exam papers in Ireland has fallen by around 14% this year compared to 2019, while the number of people sitting the exam has increased by 4%.
