DUBLIN: Heavy snow, icy conditions, freezing fog and snow will lead to dangerous travel conditions this morning, Met Eireann said.
"A status orange low temperature and ice warning" is in place across the country until this afternoon, while Ireland has been issued a status yellow low temperature and ice warning in effect until midday on December 16. Temperatures are expected to drop below -5 degrees in many areas. Temperatures last night ranged from -1 to -5 degrees Celsius, with Athenry recording -7.2 degrees Celsius.
Widespread severe frost has been warned with cold, sleet, snow, mainly near sea coasts and freezing fog at times.

Met Éireann said the low temperatures could cause dangerous conditions on lanes and roads, travel disruption, burst water pipes and damage to engines.
The minister said that the plan is to keep the schools open even though there will be discretion at the local level. Minister Darragh O'Brien announced that the whole country was being used to keep public transport open and schools open. and that the risks are greater for vulnerable members of the community. He asked people to be careful on the roads over the next few days and to be aware of elderly or vulnerable neighbors. He said there was a stable power supply and they were "managing the situation very well". He said the main roads are well gritted but the secondary roads need attention.
Northwest areas of Donegal, Mayo and parts of Galway received wintry showers. However, the ice is unlikely to melt throughout the day. Temperatures will drop to 4C along the coast, and temperatures will drop to 0 or 1C in most parts of the country. It's going to stay decent throughout the week, so expect a very cold week
Road Safety Authority communications manager Brian Farrell said motorists should heed warnings about road closures in cold weather.
He said people should be aware of local or national weather updates, road closures and conditions and advice from gardaà and local authorities.
Iarnród Éireann has announced delays to commuter services to Dublin due to the weather.In Dublin, Luas Red and Green Line services are operating with delays and passengers are advised to allow extra time when travelling.
