Dublin: A "Little Baby Bundle" scheme for 500 parents will start in February 2023 as part of a Government of Ireland pilot scheme. Minister Roderick O'Gorman had earlier introduced the scheme, saying the €300 'welcome gift' 'Little Baby Bundle' was the nation's gift to parents and newborns. The project has now been started in collaboration with University Hospital Waterford.
The bundle for new parents will contain useful items to "support new parents after birth" such as reusable nappies, maternity pads and bibs.
"The Little Baby Bundle has an estimated value of €300 and will be filled with play items to encourage early communication and bonding, household items to help with safe bathing and safe sleep, and many other useful items. Other items to support new parents after birth," the statement added. Minister O'Gorman said the first few weeks of a newborn's life are "very special for families" "We want to help new parents with practical support as they navigate the first few weeks and months. Important health messages about breastfeeding, safe sleep and postnatal depression will also be delivered in Irish and English."
500 parents across the two hospitals will be invited to take part in this pilot initiative by completing a form at their hospital after their 20 week scan. The Baby Bundle will be delivered to participating parents' homes at a time of their choosing and their feedback will inform suggestions for a wider roll-out.
"This gift is recognition from the state of a very important and special moment for parents, and is designed to promote the health and well-being of newborns and to support new parents in the first days and weeks after the birth of a baby," the department said in a statement.
The bundle includes a hooded bath towel, a baby vest, muslin squares, socks, nappy cream, a reusable nappy, reusable nappy liners, nipple cream, nursing pads, maternity pads, reusable wipes, a digital/smart thermometer, and a soft-bristle hair brush. , children's books in Irish and English, a play mat, a bath and room thermometer, a teething ring, a baby blanket, mittens, a manual breast pump, a bath sponge, a baby grow, a sling, a soft ball, a baby There will be a toothbrush, a baby monitor, a nasal sucker, a travel bag, a changing mat, a dribble big, a feeding bib, a sun hat and a comforter.
