Customers who pay their bills online will start to notice the credit on their accounts on January 2. Customers who pay as they go will get the credit this week. Additionally, Electric Ireland said that it is doubling its hardship fund from €2 to €5 million.
"2022 has been an extremely hard year for energy clients, especially due to rises in international gas prices," said Pat Fenlon, the company's executive director. We are fully cognizant of the demands our clients are under this winter.
"Electric Ireland is forgoing earnings from its home electricity business in light of these unique conditions. Residential customers of Electric Ireland can anticipate a $50 credit in the coming year.
According to Fenlon, the increase in the hardship fund "will help ensure that the fund is accessible to individuals most in need of support during the Winter months.
"We are dedicated to assisting any of our clients who are having financial issues. As always, we encourage any Electric Ireland customer having trouble paying their energy bill to get in touch with us. Together, we can come up with a sustainable payment schedule.
This year, the war in Ukraine has been the main cause of the skyrocketing gas and energy rates.
The price of purchasing electricity at wholesale has increased significantly for suppliers, and this year, many consumers have seen increases in their gas and electricity bills—sometimes by a factor of four.
However, the moratorium on disconnections for unpaid energy bills has been extended by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities, meaning that disadvantaged clients cannot be disconnected between October 2022 and March 2023.
