MANILA: Philippine authorities on Monday reported at least 8 deaths in floods caused by heavy rains in southern provinces, forcing thousands to evacuate and disrupting Christmas celebrations. Authorities added that two people have died and nine others are missing after heavy rains hit parts of the southern region of Mindanao. "Water levels have risen in areas, but the rain has stopped today," civil defense worker Robinson told AFP. Out of 45,700 people, 33,000 have been evacuated from their homes, he added.
The coastguard said more than two dozen families were rescued in Ozamiz City and Clarin Town at the height of the flooding. Two deaths were reported in the city of Jimenez.
An archipelago of more than 7,600 islands, the Philippines sees an average of 20 tropical storms per year. The Southeast Asian nation is plagued by adverse weather and crop damage, such as monsoon rains that cause deadly landslides and floods.
