Madurai: A Madurai court on Friday sentenced a police inspector and four police personnel to 11 years in prison in connection with the death of a 17-year-old boy during police interrogation.
The victim, Jai, the eldest son of Muthu Karthik, was taken by the SS Colony police in Madurai in 2019 for questioning related to a criminal case. During the interrogation, Jai was allegedly brutally beaten by the police, sustaining severe injuries that led to his death.
The case was later transferred to the CBI-CID for investigation following a High Court order. Acting on the investigation, the CBI-CID filed charges against SS Colony Police Inspector Alex Raj and constables Satish, Ravi, and Ravichandran. The trial was conducted in the Fifth Additional Sessions Court of Madurai District.
After hearing the arguments, Judge Joseph Joy sentenced Inspector Alex Raj and the four constables to 11 years imprisonment.
The court also directed that a separate case be registered against Inspector Arunachalam and Sub-Inspectors Premachandran and retired SI Kannan, as well as the four convicted personnel, for attempting to destroy evidence. The CBI-CID has been instructed to investigate and file a supplementary charge sheet in this regard. Until the investigation is complete, Inspector Arunachalam has been ordered to remain suspended.
Additionally, the court has ordered departmental action against Dr. Jayakumar and Medical Officer Srilatha of Madurai Rajaji Hospital, who were found to have allegedly concealed injuries in the post-mortem report.
