DUBLIN — Ireland is preparing one of its largest-ever security operations ahead of two major European summits scheduled to take place in Dublin next week, Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said.
More than 50 prime ministers are expected to attend the European Political Community summit on Thursday. An informal meeting of the European Council will follow on Friday. The events are being hosted as part of Ireland's six-month presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The security preparations come after several media organisations in Ireland received bomb threats earlier this week. Similar hoax threats also affected flights in parts of Europe.
Martin said he was confident that the summits would take place safely. Gardaí, the Defence Forces and cyber security teams are involved in the preparations.
However, a planned five-day work-to-rule action by the Garda Representative Association during the summit week has raised concerns. The association has cited disputes over working-time agreements and the use of compulsory overtime.
The government faces the challenge of ensuring security while managing the industrial dispute during a major international gathering.
