NEW DELHI — The Union Cabinet has approved a ₹2,814-crore scheme to strengthen India's domestic capacity to process critical minerals, including lithium and nickel. The decision, announced on November 4, aims to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen supply chains for industries relying on these materials.
The five-year scheme will run from 2026-27 to 2030-31 and provide a capital subsidy of 30 per cent of eligible investment for establishing four processing plants — two for lithium and two for nickel.
Each lithium plant will have a minimum processing capacity of 30,000 tonnes, while the two nickel plants will have a minimum capacity of 50,000 tonnes each. The scheme also aims to recover cobalt as a by-product of nickel processing.
Critical minerals are essential for electric vehicles, battery energy storage systems, electronics, defence and speciality steel industries. The government expects the initiative to strengthen domestic manufacturing, encourage investment and reduce India's dependence on imported refined materials.
