HYDERABAD — India has opened its first private facility dedicated to developing technologies for removing space debris and servicing satellites in orbit. The facility, named Base 1, has been established by Hyderabad-based space technology startup Cosmoserve Space.
The centre will develop robotic systems capable of capturing inactive satellites, removing space debris and carrying out repairs and refuelling operations in orbit. It includes specialised laboratories for orbital rendezvous and capture, space robotics research, satellite integration and mission control.
The facility was inaugurated on Thursday in the presence of Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh and Telangana IT Minister D Sridhar Babu.
Cosmoserve Space plans to begin commercial space debris removal operations by early 2028, following technology demonstration missions. Its proposed systems are designed to capture, inspect, repair or remove defunct satellites.
The growing number of inactive satellites and fragments in Earth's orbit poses risks to operational spacecraft and future space missions. The new facility marks an important development in India's private space technology sector and its efforts to contribute to safer and more sustainable space operations.
