MUMBAI — Indian stock markets remained largely steady on Friday despite a sharp fall in technology shares across global markets. Fresh foreign investment and lower oil prices helped Indian equities withstand the wider market decline.
The Nifty 50 slipped 0.09% to 24,515.3 in early trading, while the Sensex gained 0.19% to 79,467.15. Both indices had risen more than 2% on Thursday following renewed buying by foreign investors.
Foreign institutional investors purchased around ₹15,000 crore ($1.6 billion) worth of Indian shares on Thursday. This was their biggest single-day net investment in nearly six years. Net foreign portfolio inflows also reached about $4 billion over the previous ten trading sessions.
Meanwhile, global technology stocks faced heavy selling following concerns about artificial intelligence investment and weak results from major technology companies. South Korea's KOSPI and Japan's Nikkei also recorded sharp losses.
Lower crude oil prices and renewed foreign investment have provided support to Indian markets. However, global market uncertainty and movements in oil prices are expected to remain important factors for investors.
