DUBLIN — At least 27 flights across Europe were disrupted by suspected hoax bomb threats on Thursday, including services operated by Aer Lingus and Ryanair involving Ireland. Several aircraft were diverted, delayed or escorted by fighter jets, although no explosives were found.
An Aer Lingus flight from Dublin to Rome, carrying 151 passengers and six crew members, was diverted to an airbase in northern France as a security precaution. French fighter jets escorted the aircraft before it landed at Évreux-Fauville airbase in Normandy. Passengers were moved to safety and bomb disposal teams examined the aircraft.
A Ryanair flight travelling from London Stansted to Cork was also delayed after Cork Airport received an anonymous bomb threat. The aircraft was evacuated after landing, and Gardaí examined the plane and luggage before confirming that the threat was a hoax. The flight was delayed by around 90 minutes.
Other affected services involved airlines including Wizz Air, Finnair, easyJet, Iberia and LOT. Airports in France, Spain, Bulgaria, Poland and Denmark also reported security incidents.
Irish Defence Minister Helen McEntee described the developments as extremely concerning. Dublin and Cork airport operator daa said both airports were operating normally and urged passengers to continue with their travel plans.
Investigations into the threats are continuing. No organisation or individual has been officially identified as responsible.
