KYIV — Russian missile and drone attacks on Ukraine overnight damaged energy facilities around the capital, disrupting electricity, water and heating supplies. At least two people were killed and around a dozen others injured across the country, Ukrainian authorities said on Saturday.
The attacks targeted energy infrastructure in and around Kyiv, as well as other regions. Several ballistic missiles struck the Northern Bridge over the Dnipro River, damaging parts of the structure and disrupting transport.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the situation with the city's energy supply was extremely difficult. Electricity, water and heating services were affected as temperatures approached freezing.
Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched 36 ballistic missiles and 172 drones during the overnight attacks. Air defence systems intercepted four missiles and shot down 149 drones.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said electricity substations in five regions had also been hit. Ukraine's Energy Ministry reported serious damage to facilities supplying electricity from two nuclear power plants to the capital and central regions.
Russia's Defence Ministry said its forces had targeted military-industrial facilities as well as energy and transport infrastructure in Ukraine.
The latest attacks came days before a new round of talks involving Ukraine, Russia and the United States is scheduled to take place in Abu Dhabi on November 10, as part of efforts to find a way to end the war.
