WASHINGTON — The United States has carried out limited strikes against Iranian air defence systems near the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, President Donald Trump said.
Trump described the operation as a limited military action targeting Iranian air defence facilities. Iranian state media reported two explosions in the Suza area of Qeshm Island. Iranian military sources also claimed that their air defences had brought down a US drone, but Washington has not confirmed that claim.
The strikes come amid continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran. Qatar is mediating proposals aimed at reducing the conflict and addressing disagreements over Iran's nuclear programme.
The discussions reportedly include possible steps involving US sanctions, frozen Iranian assets, international inspections of nuclear facilities and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
The waterway is a major route for global oil shipments. Any prolonged disruption could affect energy supplies and international markets.
Diplomatic efforts are continuing as regional governments seek to prevent further escalation.
