Vatican: Former Pope Benedict XVI has died at his Vatican residence at the age of 95 following an illness.

In 2013, he became the first pope to abdicate since Gregory XII in 1415, having led the Catholic Church for less than eight years. Benedict spent his final years at the Mater Ecclesiae monastery within the walls of the Vatican. His successor, Pope Francis, visited him frequently.
In 2005, Benedict XVI became the oldest pope since Clement XII (1724-1730) and the ninth pope to be elected from Germany. The Pope is also proficient in piano music, speaking German, Italian, French, English, Spanish, Latin, Greek and Hebrew.
German-born Joseph Ratzinger was 78 when he became one of the oldest popes elected in 2005. Pope Benedict XVI holds German and Vatican citizenships. Benedict XVI was one of the most famous leaders of the modern Catholic Church and a prolific writer. Cardinal Ratzinger, who was a close aide of John Paul II, before becoming the Pope, held positions such as lecturer at various universities in Germany, theological advisor to the Second Vatican Council, Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of Munich and Freising, Cardinal, Head of the Congregation for the Faith, and Dean of the Congregation of Cardinals.
His real name is Joseph Ratzinger. Born on 16 April 1972 in Bavaria, Germany. He was elected as the successor of Pope John Paul II at the Papal Conclave held on April 19, 2005, and celebrated his first Eucharist as Pope on April 25. He was appointed on May 7 of the same year. He was Pope from 2005 to 2013 and resigned from his position on February 28, 2013.
During much of his tenure, the Catholic Church faced accusations, legal claims and official reports of decades of child abuse by priests.
