Fire & Safety and others had to wade through snow to rescue children at Babbs Mill Park in Kingshurst on Sunday. According to the report, all the policemen who went to the scene entered the water without regard for their own safety or special clothing. An officer was trying to break the ice to rescue the children, and as a result the officer suffered mild hypothermia yesterday. He has now been discharged from the hospital and is fully recovered, the report added. Members of the public and police officers first went into the cold water to try to pull the children out before specialist firefighters reached the children.
The search in the lake continued yesterday. The first information received by the police was that there were 6 children in the water. So the teams had to make sure 100% that no one else was in the water. Police say they cannot say how long the children were in the water before emergency services arrived. However, Supt Harris said officers arrived within minutes of the first call at 14:30 GMT.
St Anthony's Primary School in Kingshurst tweeted it would be "closed on Monday due to the incident at Babb's Mill" and asked for prayers for those affected.
Police say the incident is a reminder of the dangers of frozen water. "It may look pretty, but it can be deadly," officials said. "Please help prevent this from happening again. "Temperatures are thought to have dropped to 1C (34F) in the area at the time of the incident and -3C (26F) overnight. After being rescued, the children were rushed to Birmingham Children's Hospital and Heartlands Hospital, but could not be saved, police said.
A 10-year-old hero "Jack" died, after trying to save three other children who fell into an icy lake, his family have revealed. Relatives said Jack Johnson, a schoolboy, bravely rushed to help the other children after hearing their screams.
