Moate: Driver killed in bus crash near Moate, Co Westmeath. The 55-year-old driver was driving the bus Eireann Coach along the old N6 between Mott and Athlone at around 5.30pm yesterday when it went off the road and crashed into a ditch. The road remains closed and a forensic collision investigation team examined the scene this morning. Gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward and any road users with video footage are asked to make it available to gardaÃ.
The driver was taken to Midland Regional Hospital in Tullamore where he later died. There were about 20 passengers on board the bus when the accident occurred. However, some were taken to the hospital for treatment, but their lives are not in danger.
Chief Executive Buss Eireann Stephen Kent paid tribute to his colleague's family. In a statement, Mr.Kent paid tribute to the work of the emergency services and their assistance to the driver and passengers.
