Dublin: The HSE reported a fall in the number of people with respiratory infections after a rise earlier in the year. HSE Chief Clinical Officer Dr Cole Henry said: "The latest data suggests that the flu season has peaked and the pressure from Covid-19 and RSV continues to decrease.
"However, even if this pattern continues, we expect continued pressure on the healthcare system from these viruses. I would like to acknowledge the work of healthcare teams across the country over the past weeks in hospitals and in the community.
"We urge eligible groups to follow public health advice, including vaccination against influenza and Covid-19, as well as the importance of people with respiratory symptoms staying at home until they resolve".
Stephen Mulvaney, interim CEO of the HSE, said there had been a significant improvement in conditions in emergency departments. He said that the number of patients in the trolley waiting for the hospital bed has decreased.
"As we expect, once the flu season picks up, it will take several weeks for the pressure on hospitals to ease. "We continue to work to reduce these numbers further in a safe manner," he added.
In the second week of 2023, the reported cases of these infections decreased significantly.
- Covid-19: 47% reduction in number of cases
- Influenza: 48% reduction in number of cases
- RSV : 38% reduction in number of cases.
and so on. The number of people admitted to hospital with these respiratory viruses also fell in the second week of the year, the HSE said. Covid hospital admissions fell by 47%, while flu and RSV admissions fell by 49% and 26% respectively.
