IRELAND: Irish nationals not to book flights until they have passport: Department of Foreign Affairs

Dublin : Know the current waiting time on passport application. Ahead of what is expected to be a busy summer holiday this time around, the Department of Foreign Affairs has advised Irish citizens not to book flights until they have their passports.

The current average turnaround time is issued. A DFA spokesperson said: We issue 90% of passport online applications within the advertised turnaround time. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs, online applications are the fastest way to get an Irish passport.

The Passport Service advises of current waiting times for new passports. Demand for new passports was high last year, with a record number of 1,080,000 passports issued in 2022.

Current average turnaround times are as follows:

Simple renewals - 10 working days
Complex renewals - 15 working days
First time applications - 20 working days
Applications by post - 8 weeks

A standard 10-year passport costs €75 for an adult and €20 for a child. A passport card costs €35 for an adult, with additional pages available in bulk for €100.

Almost all Irish citizens can use Passport Online to apply for their first passport or to renew their passport.

When using passport online, people submit an online application and then send the required supporting documents by post. Once it is received, people can use the passport tracker to get updates on its current status.

According to the DFA, most passport applications involve the following five steps:

Application Received: Your passport online application has been received. It cannot be processed until you send us the necessary supporting documents by post.
Alert: We have received your request. You must submit supporting documents to proceed with the application.
Application Processing: Your supporting documents have been received. We are currently verifying these documents.
Application Processing: Your application is being processed.
Printing: Printing your passport book. All submitted documents will be returned separately.

Meanwhile, applications through An Post take more time than Passport Online. The current turnaround time is 8 weeks, although the DFA says this is "not a service guarantee". However, people are advised to use the passport online if they have travel plans within the next three months.
