VISAKHAPATNAM — Very severe Cyclone Arnab began making landfall along the Andhra Pradesh coast early on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain and powerful winds that uprooted trees and disrupted electricity supplies.
The storm is crossing the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, close to Yanam. The India Meteorological Department forecast sustained winds of 125–135 kmph, with gusts reaching 150 kmph.
Authorities warned that storm surges could inundate low-lying coastal areas. Thousands of people were moved to safer locations, while some train and flight services were cancelled as a precaution.
Coastal districts, including Kakinada, Konaseema and Visakhapatnam, experienced heavy rain and strong winds. Emergency teams remained on alert as officials monitored the storm’s movement and assessed the damage.
Residents in vulnerable areas have been urged to follow official safety instructions and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions improve.
