MUMBAI — Three people were injured after a fire broke out in a high-rise residential building in Ghatkopar East, Mumbai, on Friday evening, November 6. The blaze was brought under control after more than two hours of firefighting operations, and the building was evacuated.
The fire was reported at around 8.08 pm in a residential building on Vallabh Baug Lane in the Pantnagar area. One of the injured, Sainath Awale, 45, suffered 27 per cent burns and was admitted to Rajawadi Hospital. Two other residents, Nirav Lodaya, 34, and Rajesh Lodaya, 47, suffered suffocation and were taken to Zynova Hospital. All three were reported to be in stable condition.
The Mumbai Fire Brigade deployed at least eight fire engines and other firefighting equipment. The incident was initially classified as a Level-I fire before being upgraded to Level-II as the operation intensified. Firefighters brought the blaze under control at around 11.10 pm.
The cause of the fire remains disputed. Fire brigade officials suspect that a firecracker, possibly a rocket, may have entered a flat and triggered the blaze. However, Deputy Commissioner of Police Ganesh Shinde attributed the incident to a short circuit.
Mumbai Chief Fire Officer Ravindra Ambulgekar also raised concerns about the building's internal firefighting system, saying it was initially not functioning and had to be activated by fire brigade personnel. He said the matter would be investigated.
The incident has raised concerns about fire safety arrangements in high-rise residential buildings. Authorities are expected to examine the cause of the fire and the functioning of the building's firefighting systems.
