Dublin: Student nurses and midwives receive additional accommodation, food and uniform allowances. Student nurses and midwives will be paid 80% of a staff nurse's or midwife's pay scale during their final year of internship under plans to be approved by Cabinet today.
Students away from their usual place of residence receive up to €300 per week while participating in practice placements and up to €80 per night for accommodation students. Student nurses and midwives will each receive €500 per year for years one to three of their studies. There will also be a targeted action to contribute to cover the additional cost of meals associated with a training placement outside the student's main placement site. Student nurses and midwives can avail uniform laundry services during overnight stays on a guaranteed basis at a reasonable cost. Student nurses and midwives are also issued two additional uniforms at the start of their internship.
Health Minister Stephen Donnelly said he was delighted to introduce an improved travel and livelihood scheme for student nurses and midwives.
“I am ensuring that student nurses and midwives in their final year of internship have their pay set in line with the recommendation of the McHugh Report by increasing their pay rate to 80% of staff nurse/midwife pay point one. Scale – This action, worth €3.6 million, further demonstrates our commitment to retaining talent across our nursing and midwifery degree programs and our appreciation for the effort and dedication students show during the crucial final year internship,” Enhanced travel and subsistence supports for all eligible student nurses and midwives from the start of the current academic year from September 2022 Donnelly said it would be backdated.
Students face the same cost-of-living challenges as their eligible counterparts, many of whom struggle to meet transportation, fuel, heating, lodging, and other needs to complete their training. This includes the cost of living away from home during placement, which students cannot afford. Travel is a large part of a student placement, but for some students who have to pay for accommodation in two places, support to help with costs and uniforms would mean a lot to our student members.
The INMO welcomed the new measures, not only in the context of supporting student nurses and midwives, but also in building measures to keep them qualified.
