"We have a limit on how many boxes of amoxicillin we are allowed to order, and then they go to the patients' counters as soon as they arrive. When we run out of our main antibiotics - which pharmacies are experiencing shortages on a daily basis - we have to call the prescriber and ask them to prescribe an alternative, which is really time-consuming for us. This makes it difficult to reach patients when doctors in practices or hospital wards reply back. "There is an urgent need for this because people have to wait a week to start antibiotics," she said. In the UK, an emergency protocol has been introduced to allow pharmacists to self-prescribe alternative medicines, which Horan says is needed here.
Influenza and Covid-19 levels are on the rise in Ireland, with people developing secondary infections requiring antibiotics. More people are experiencing conjunctivitis as a symptom, and there is a shortage of over-the-counter eye-drops, so people have to visit ten pharmacies and find them.
Conjunctivitis may not be extremely dangerous, but it can be very uncomfortable, which means children should be kept at home. Eyedrops are actually available that need to be prescribed by a GP, but we can't dispense them over the counter, which we can now do in the UK by law," explained Horan.
She said the government has clear steps to address some of the short-term antibiotic supply issues, but since the IPU has asked for a protocol to be introduced, the government has not been seen engaging with the idea, she explained.
