SIKKIM: Sixteen Army soldiers were killed and four others injured after their vehicle skidded

Sikkim: Sixteen Army soldiers were killed and four others injured after their vehicle skidded down a steep slope near North Sikkim on Friday.

The accident happened when the vehicle carrying the soldiers overturned at hill valley in Sema in North Sikkim. One of the 3 military vehicles that went to Thangu was involved in the accident. The vehicle was part of a three-vehicle convoy that had moved from Chatten in the morning towards Thangu. Enroute at Zema, the vehicle met with an accident.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased. In his condolence note, Rajnath Singh said that the nation is extremely indebted to the service and commitment of the soldiers. He said that he prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

“A rescue mission was immediately launched, and four injured soldiers have been air evacuated. Unfortunately, three Junior Commissioned Officers and 13 soldiers succumbed to the injuries sustained in the accident,” the Indian Army said in a statement.

According to military sources, the vehicle carrying the soldiers fell from the slope of the gorge towards deep hill.
