Pope Francis condemned Iran’s execution of protesters for the first time on Monday in his traditional New Year’s address to diplomats, and said the war in Ukraine was “a crime against God and humanity”.

Pope made the remarks in an annual address to accredited ambassadors to the Vatican, listing the Holy See's top foreign policy priorities. Pope Francis compared the Vatican's objection to the death sentence to its opposition to abortion in his speech, asserting that both are violations of the fundamental right to life.

Pope revised church doctrine on the death sentence and declared it "inadmissible" un all situations.

The primary innovative aspect of his speech in the Hall of Benedictions of the Vatican was his decision to speak out about the widespread turmoil in Iran after Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian woman, died in police detention last September.

As is the case right now in Iran as a result of recent protests calling for greater regard for women's dignity, he said, "the right to life is also threatened in those nations where the death sentence continues to be used."

In connection with the wave of widespread protests in the Islamic Republic, four protestors have been put to death. According to Francis, "the death penalty cannot be used for a supposed state justice because it neither serves as a deterrent nor provides justice to victims, but merely satisfies the need for vengeance."

The death penalty, he continued, is "always inadmissible since it challenges the inviolability and the dignity of the individual," and should be abolished globally.

Francis appealed for respect for women, stating they were still frequently viewed as second-class citizens and exposed to assault and abuse. He claimed that many nations were only observing human rights pledges on a lip-service basis. "It is wrong that, as is the case with Afghan women, a segment of a nation be denied access to education," he remarked.

The "conflict in Ukraine, with its trail of death and ruin, with its attacks on civil infrastructures that cause lives to be lost not only through gunshot and acts of murder, but also from hunger and severe cold," Francis said.

As soon as he said that, he immediately quoted from the constitution of the Vatican, which stated that "every act of war directed to the indiscriminate destruction of whole cities or vast areas with their inhabitants is a crime against God and humanity which merits firm and unequivocal condemnation."

He remarked, referring to the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis, "Sadly, today as well, the nuclear threat is elevated, and the world feels fear and pain once more."

The pope repeated his appeal for a total ban on nuclear weapons, saying even their possession for reasons of deterrence is “immoral”.
