Dublin: The Health Service Executive is urging people seeking medical help to consider all options before attending a hospital emergency department, amid what it says will be "one of the busiest periods the health service has ever experienced".
As of this morning, about 1,500 people were in hospital with respiratory ailments, he said, adding that the system was under significant pressure. Unfortunately, we expect that to continue for a few more weeks. "We are not yet at the peak of influenza, but thankfully we are starting to see a decrease in RSV virus in children."
University Hospital Limerick was hit with delays yesterday due to "record highs" in the hospital's emergency department. The UL Hospital Group said in a statement that the "unprecedented" number of people arriving at the ED was due to an increase in respiratory infections, including RSV.
In a statement, the HSE said some patients "experience regrettably long waits in our emergency departments and urgent patients will always be given priority for treatment and care". The statement advised that sick people could visit community pharmacies, GPs, services outside GPs and minor injury units.
HSE Chief Operations Officer Damian McCallion said, "Emergency departments are extremely busy due to the combination of unprecedentedly high levels of flu, Covid-19 and other respiratory illnesses in the community. Those who believe they are seriously ill and need urgent care should certainly come to hospital, but pharmacists, GPs and GP out-of-hours "We would urge others to consider seeking support from the services and minor injury units," Mr. McCallion said.
"These services have emergency responses for patients with respiratory and other urgent medical conditions." Covid-19 and influenza cases are increasing rapidly, while RSV cases, which have been on the decline for several weeks, are now on the rise.
Damian McCallion said emergency departments are becoming extremely busy and advice for people to seek alternatives to attending emergency departments will continue in the coming weeks, adding that care in EDs is currently "far from ideal" and clear protocols are in place. Prioritize care for those most in need.
