Athlone: Ireland's fully electric town bus service was launched in Athlone, Midlands last week by Transport Minister Eamonn Ryan. 10 million euros were spent on these services. Several projects in the transport sector are under this programme.
The Department of Transport hopes to reduce CO2 emissions by 400,000 kg annually by introducing electric service. The services are being launched as part of the Pathfinder programme, part of the government's Sustainable Mobility Policy, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector by 50 per cent by 2030.
The services will be fully functional from January 29. As part of the project, 11 new electric buses will operate from Athlone. Athlone Station Road Bus Éireann depot also has special facilities for charging buses. Electricity for this will be supplied from the newly constructed substation.
The new electric fleet operated by Bus Éireann is the first service in the country. Bus Éireann has already provided more than 500 hours of training to drivers and mechanics as part of the launch of the new services. The training was related to driving, operation and maintenance of vehicles.
