Dublin: A new and highly transmissible coronavirus variant XBB.1.5 - or 'Kraken' - is likely to be the dominant strain in Ireland, according to various immunologists. They described the variant XBB.1.5 - or 'Kraken' as "highly transferable" and "completely different from the Omicron".
But vaccines still work against it, especially the bivalent variations now available. So if people haven't received their booster, it's a good idea to get vaccinated. Fewer than five cases of the 'Kraken' Covid strain have been detected in Ireland so far.
Variant XBB.1.5 - or 'Kraken' is a more widespread variant and people who have not yet been vaccinated should get vaccinated. It's already low in Ireland and other parts of Europe right now, but it's likely to become the dominant variant here as well.
This variant is spreading rapidly in the United States, where it is becoming dominant. The big issue surrounding it is that it is completely different from Omicron. So people infected with the original omicron are less likely to develop immunity.
