Dublin: Opportunities for carers and support staff to become nurses in Ireland.
Support staff sponsorship in the Irish Public Health Service is available to public health service staff who wish to become nurses or midwives. Such people can study nursing course under HSE sponsorship and become nurses or midwives. The opportunity is for those who have been working as a carer or support staff for more than two years.
To qualify for this scheme, you must be directly involved in providing care to patients or clients in a patient/midwifery context. For example, healthcare assistants and task attendants are eligible for this scheme.
If successful, you will receive your basic salary for the duration of your nursing or midwifery degree program. You are expected to return to your substantive post outside of the academic semesters for the duration of the program.
Who can apply?
To apply for this sponsorship scheme you must do the following:
- You must have at least 2 years relevant service in the Irish Public Health Service by 1 January when you apply
- Must have satisfactory service record
- You must be above 23 years of age as on 1st January of the year in which you are applying for sponsorship
- Must pass a written assessment test conducted by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI)
The sponsorship scheme is not open to the following public health workers:
- Currently taking preregistration/midwifery degree
- Withdrawn from pre-registration nursing/degree education program within 5 years prior to sponsorship application
- Deferred acceptance of a place on a pre-registration or midwifery education program from the previous year
- Not directly involved in providing care to patients or consumers
