Cavan: Several salmonella infections found on poultry farms in Ireland. The cases are being investigated by the Department of Agriculture. A number of affected farms are understood to be in the County Cavan area. Salmonella is a bacterium that is considered a public health hazard, so the Department of Agriculture takes seriously the detection of infections in poultry farms.
The Department of Agriculture has confirmed the presence of salmonella in eight chicken farms. Detecting the disease means killing all the birds on the eight farms and preventing any from entering the food chain. Some farms are already cleaning up.
Salmonella is a public health problem and can cause serious illness, although some infected people experience only mild illness. According to the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI), symptoms can range from 6 to 72 hours, although people infected with Salmonella usually develop symptoms 12 to 36 hours after infection.
The most common symptom is diarrhea, which can sometimes be bloody. Other symptoms may include fever, headache, and abdominal pain. The illness usually lasts 4-7 days. Diarrhea may sometimes require hospitalization. The elderly, infants, and those with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop severe disease.
The incident was first reported in connection with last week's Western Brand food recall. But to date, no human illness has been reported in connection with this investigation with broiler chickens, the FSAI said.
The Department for Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) said it was working with the FSAI and the National Reference Laboratory for Salmonella to determine the cause of the outbreak in different areas at the same time.
