Cork: Hospitals are overcrowded as winter grips Europe. In recent weeks, Ireland has been hit hard by covid and respiratory infections. An 89-year-old patient, Matthew Healy, a farmer from Bering, County Cork, early this morning. His wife also died early this month.
A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) has been appointed and a Garda Family Liaison Officer (FLO) continues to liaise with Mr. Healy's family. A hospital spokesperson said counseling services are being provided to patients and staff injured in the incident. "The incident took place just after 5am and gardaà were alerted immediately," the spokesman added.

Gardaà in Cork are continuing to investigate all the circumstances surrounding the death of Mr Matthew Healy, who died in the attack shortly after 5:30am. A 30-year-old man who was arrested at the scene under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 remains in custody at Bridewell Garda Station in Cork. It is learned that he was assaulted by another patient in a ward. He died on the spot.
Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster carried out a post mortem at Cork University Hospital this afternoon. Gardaà said they were not releasing details. Hospital staff and patients are believed to have witnessed the attack. The hospital staff were shocked by the incident. The scene at the hospital has been preserved for forensic and technical examination by the Crime Unit's Cork City Divisional Scenes.
