The week ending December 24 saw 3,809 Covid-19 cases in Ireland, up from 3,118 the week before, with 737 patients hospitalised due to COVID-19.
In a news release from the HSE, Chief Clinical Officer Colm Henry stated:
"At this time, the sharp increase in COVID-19, influenza, and other respiratory ailment patients causes us great concern.
Eileen Whelan, the national coordinator for the Covid vaccination programme at the HSE, said: "I strongly recommend that everyone have their second booster shot. It will strengthen your immunity against Covid-19 infection, which we know tends to decline after a few months after your last vaccination, and provide continued protection against serious sickness.
Only a small number of people under 50, such as healthcare professionals or those with underlying medical conditions, were previously qualified to obtain second boosters.
Dr Henry said "Getting a vaccine, whether it's your next Covid-19 booster or a flu vaccine if you or your children want to get it, can really help protect you, the people around you, and our health services.
Meanwhile, general practitioners have also been instructed to work more hours on Saturdays and other intervening days. It is reported that more than 500 GPs have already volunteered to work overtime.
They will work three days a week from 5pm to 7pm and on Saturdays from 9am to 1pm.
