The health authority revealed Bernard Gloster's appointment as the new CEO of the Health Service Executive (HSE) on Friday.
The state's child and family agency, Tusla, is now led by Mr. Gloster, who will begin his new position in the spring of 2019. The Tulsa CEO has been in that post since September of this year.
Over the course of his more than 30 years in the industry, Mr. Gloster has held a variety of prominent positions with the HSE, including that of CEO of HSE Mid West Community Healthcare.
He works as a social worker and has an MBA from Oxford Brookes University and an MSc in Management Practice from the University of Central Florida.
"I am thrilled that someone of Bernard's expertise, both within the HSE and externally within Tusla, is taking up this job," said Ciarán Devane, chairman of the HSE Board, in announcing the appointment.
As the HSE, like other health systems, enters a phase requiring significant transformation and development, Bernard's experience and dedication to public service will be of the utmost value.
Stephen Donnelly, the minister of health, claimed that Mr. Gloster has a history of "innovation and reform" in the health and social care sectors.
"I know he is deeply devoted to making sure that the Irish health service becomes one of the best places in the world to be treated, as well as to work in, at a time of extraordinary investment in the HSE.
"I look forward to working closely with Bernard as we work towards our goal of delivering universal health care for our people. I believe that the responsibility of leading our health services is among the most essential responsibilities in our public sector."
Being chosen to head the executive, a group "of tremendous fundamental importance to the public," was a "honour," according to Mr. Gloster.
Announcing his resignation in June, Mr. Gloster's predecessor, Paul Reid, wrote on Twitter that he wanted to spend more time with his family.
