India says its troops have clashed with Chinese troops in a disputed area along the border, the first time in more than a year. China and India share a disputed 3,440 km (2,100 mi) long disputed border - called the Line of Actual Control or LAC - which is poorly demarcated. The presence of rivers, lakes and glaciers means that the line can change. Soldiers from both sides - representing the world's two largest armies - face off in many places.

Tensions sometimes escalate into confrontations. However, both sides have been trying to de-escalate since a major battle in June 2020 in the Galwan Valley of Ladakh region that killed 20 Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese soldiers. That battle — fought with clubs and sticks, not guns — was the first deadly encounter between the two sides in the region in 45 years.

In another encounter in January 2021, soldiers from both sides were injured. The encounter took place on the border between China and the Indian state of Sikkim, which is located between Bhutan and Nepal. In September, the two countries agreed to withdraw from a disputed area along their western Himalayan border, and both sides began withdrawing troops. The countries have been working to reduce tensions since at least 24 soldiers were killed in a major clash in 2020.

But on Monday, the Indian Army said the encounter took place last Friday in the Tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh, India's eastern tip.Minor injuries were involved on both sides. China has not yet commented on the position. But Reuters reported that Indian military sources said at least six Indian soldiers were injured. "Both sides immediately disengaged from the area," the Indian Army said. The military report added that commanders from both sides immediately held a meeting "to restore peace and order."

Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh told Parliament on Tuesday that no Indian soldiers were injured or seriously injured in the encounter and that the incident was taken up diplomatically. "Due to the timely intervention of the Indian army chiefs, the PLA soldiers returned to their positions," he added.
